Any nation developing these types of weapons is bad, including America. I don't see why these nations just can't agree on NOT developing nuclear weapons as it will literally decimate cities. Everyone should have a nuclear disarmament.

If everyone agrees to stop developing nuclear weapons and gets rid of them, if some villain then comes along and develops them in secret they'd be pretty fucking powerful.

I think an independent body would have to do annual checks of the major nuclear players to make sure they aren't weaponising them.

North Korea has played a blinder recently.

They aren't planning on going to war. They know they would lose. This is about doing battle diplomatically and they have absolutely hammered the international community here. Given the economic sanctions in place, the only way for them to get a seat at the table is to push ahead with this development so that they are in a position to threaten South Korea and Japan.

They've done that. Even a conventional targetted pre-emptive strike by the US right now would be too big a risk. Seoul is only 35 miles from the North Korean border and home to 25 million people. There are 25,000 US troops on the border and over a hundred thousand more in immediate strike vicinity. The risk is too great and the US know that.

Historically, this type of escalation is not uncommon. Every year, once side carries out tests. The other side responds with their own training drills and missile tests. It escalates and then a mediator (normally through China) calms the situation down.

The only difference this time is that the US is far more hawkish than they were under Obama. Trump talks continuously of raining fire down on North Korea, but his generals know full well that this is a bluff and a shit one at that (due to the risks above).

Kim Jong Un has proven through this last few years that he is not an idiot. He has learned from the failures of dictators like Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi that the way to win lasting security is not to invade anyone or go to war, but to put doubt into the minds of the powerful (in this case, the US, China, Japan).

Trump, for all his rhetoric, while, I am certain, be made to heel by his advisors and generals. He will talk tough, but ultimately deals will be done in the background to perhaps allow additional trade through China or similar. Both sides can claim victory at having averted a war that was never going to be allowed to happen.

The one caveat to all this is that of 'human error'. From what I've read Kim Jong Un isn't the 'crazy' we all make him out to be. He's a tyrant who has one aim. To remain in power. But we could be wrong. Maybe he hasn't learned from Saddam and decides to launch an attack against a neighbour. Similarly, Trump is an unknown quantity. He's handled this latest escalation appallingly. I do believe his generals will not allow a pre-emptive strike. But Trump is a wildcard and it can't be ruled out.

Fun times. Glad I'm on the other side of the World.
