    Team news

Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo remain out as they continue to recover from long-term injuries sustained last season.

Eric Bailly and Phil Jones missed Tuesday's UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid through suspension, but their continental suspension does not impact domestic matches.

West Ham expect defender Aaron Cresswell to be available for their opening Premier League match on Sunday.

Captain Mark Noble has shaken off a minor toe problem which saw the midfielder miss a couple of day's training, but Michail Antonio will not be involved as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury with a run-out for the Under 23s against Everton on Friday night.

Striker Hernandez could feature against his old club, while fellow summer signings Hart, Zabaleta, Arnautovic and teenager Sead Haksabanovic could also make their Hammers debut.

Forward Andy Carroll (groin), Diafra Sakho (back), midfielder Manuel Lanzini and Cheikhou Kouyate (both knee) all continue their rehabilitation.

    Opta stats

Three of the last five Premier League games between these two clubs have ended in a draw, with one win apiece in this run.

United are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League home games with West Ham (W7 D2 L0) - their last home league defeat against the Hammers was on the final day of the 2006-07 season.

No team has won more opening day fixtures in the Premier League than United (16, level with Chelsea).

West Ham have lost more opening day fixtures than any other Premier League club (10).

Jose Mourinho has won seven of his previous eight opening day Premier League fixtures as a manager (D1).

Mourinho has never lost a home match on a Sunday in all competitions in his managerial career, winning 86 and drawing 26 of 112 games.

Lukaku scored in seven straight Premier League matches for Everton against West Ham between 2013 and 2016, but failed to find the net in his last match against them in April at the London Stadium.

I've got this down as a straightforward win. West Ham don't have enough to break us down or the strength to threaten from set pieces. Meanwhile we should give them nightmares at the other end.

    3-0 United (Lukaku, Mata, Rashford)

Be good to get back to OT looking forward to it. Moved our seats from the tunnel. We are now at the front of the Stretty End, bang centre over the One Love Stretford End Banner

    Buzzing.

    Sound like sweet seats those

C'mon United. Lets get off to a good start.

Really think Lukaku and Matic are exactly what we needed, and should see us right for a top 4 berth.

    2-0

You don't want to know. Why ruin the moment? I'll just say the scoreline was to be expected - the next five games are tougher.

It's never good when I talk about Mourinho.

On the game today, on the plus side, I was happy Herrera was left out for a number 10 - I think we need the extra attacking player against the weaker sides. I thought Matic impressed again and provided the platform for others to get forward more.

On the downside, I was disappointed we dropped off after taking the lead and with the defensive substitution - Fellaini for Mata - it's asking for trouble. It's also a worry that three of our goals came from poor defending/goalkeeping which doesn't inspire confidence when we come up against more competent teams.

At least, like last season, we can enjoy being top on the opening weekend, but I wouldn't get too excited.

As opposed to most other goals which come from... what? Good defending?

The aim of football is to make the opposition defence look poor.

    What you mean dropped off?

After we brought on Fellainis, not that I credit him, we went on to score 2 more goals.

Aye, there's a difference between simply dropping off and making astute tactical decisions. At 2-0 up Mata's role had become fairly redundant, so José threw on another powerhouse midfielder to further fuck with West Ham's gameplan after they brought on Diafra Sakho — Fellaini took the Senegalese forward out of the picture by nullifying that added aerial presence that the Hammers were relying on to get back into the game. Fifteen minutes later we'd doubled our lead.

    Yet still Gav criticises?

A 4-0 win doesn't instill confidence because the opposition defence made errors... Hmmm. Fuck off.

It doesn't instil confidence because we were up against a poor team and, rather than blowing them away, they self-imploded.

We didn't just blow them away — we steamrolled them flat, folded them up like a paper aeroplane and launched them out over the Stretford End.

Self imploded, bollocks. We absolutely demolished them.

Lol and only Gav can be unhappy with a 4-0 win.

In the words of @iczster, fuck me.
